I think we can all agree that you can never have too many rings on your fingers. Rings have the power to make us look and feel special, which is why we love wearing them. Here's everything you need to know about rings.

Why rings are special - from engagement to cocktail rings

Rings are fun, frivolous and fashionable. They come in all shapes and sizes and made for all manner of occasions. They are capable of making all kinds of statements about who we are and who, or what, we love.

Like single bands that say ‘I love you’. Statement rings that scream ‘here I am!’. And beautifully curated stacks that say ‘this is me.’

With so many options to choose from it's hard to pick a favourite. But the good news is, you don't have to! Because there's a ring for every occasion and outfit.

Why we love rings

Here at Niche we love rings in all their various guises. And in our collection we have every kind you could imagine. From once-in-a-lifetime engagement rings, to fashionable stacking rings and show-stopping cocktail rings. We even have a bespoke design service, for when an off-the-shelf design simply won’t do.

And we're going to share everything you ever wanted to know about rings.

Ring sizes - how do I know what size ring to buy?

Before we get into talking about different types of ring and when to wear them, we should probably talk about ring sizes. Ring sizing can seem rather confusing. And while there are UK standard sizes these can differ from other part of the world and some jewellery designers may use their own sizes.

In truth, the best and most accurate way to find your correct ring size is always to get measured at the jeweller.

But if you’re in a rush and need to find out your or someone else’s size, it is possible to work this out at home with a pen, a piece of string and a ruler.

  1. Use the string to measure around the finger you want to wear your ring on.
  2. Mark with the pen where the string would cross.
  3. Lay your string out flat and measure how many millimetres to your pen mark.
  4. Divide that number by 3.14 and you should have a fairly good calculation for the diameter of the ring you need.

You can use this diameter measurement to find your ring size using a ring conversion chart. You can also use a chart like this to measure an existing ring that fits the same finger. Measure the diameter (the width of the ring across the whole in the inside) and use the chart to find out what size it is.

Once you know what size you need, it’s time to get choosing!

Engagement rings

When buying anything as precious as an engagement ring, you should definitely get your finger measured by an expert. We can help with that in our store - as well as provide a wealth of advice about different brands, designs and styles.

Choosing your engagement ring is a big decision. You’ll need to give thought to the style, stones, type of metal you like. Check out our previous blogs on choosing an engagement ring, the ultimate checklist for plenty of advice to help you make the right choice.

Wedding bands

As with engagement rings, when it comes to choosing a wedding band that you'll wear for the rest of your life, you definitely need to get your finger measured by an expert.

It's usually best to choose wedding bands at the same time as your engagement ring, as you may want them to match.

Wedding band - diamond or plain?

Wedding bands come in all different styles, from the traditional plain gold band to those set with diamonds, twisted metal and other details.

Eternity rings

Eternity rings are incredibly personal. They are a symbol of the love between you and that special person you married and want to be with forever.

Different styles of eternity rings

As with wedding rings, there are many different styles out there to choose from. From half eternity rings with a semi-circle of stones. To full, twisted and shaped bands. Some come studded with diamonds, others with emeralds, rubies and sapphires.

Cocktail rings

Now we're on to the less serious end of the spectrum - and here's where you can have a lot of fun experimenting.

Cocktail rings are back in fashion and with good reason. They’re the perfect piece of jewellery for making a statement. Ideal for adding a splash of colour or sparkle to your party outfit, a touch of class to your dinner attire or impact to your power suit.

Choose from large metal pieces to those set with glorious gemstones or sumptuous glass. Cocktail rings ooze elegance and nostalgia, glamour and style. Wear one or wear several, depending on how much glamour you want to bring to your look.

Charm rings and ring stacks

Ring stacks are a slightly more subtle but equally fun way to express yourself. Choose rings with charms that reflect your interests and personality.

Layer them with delicate metal bands in silver and gold. Add beaded versions with colourful elements, or ones set with sparkling gemstones in a variety of colours. The possibilities are endless.
